Purpose Investments has officially announced the launch of the first spot-based XRP exchange-traded fund (ETF) in North America. The fund is scheduled to begin trading on June 18, 2025, and will be listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX). This development follows the company’s receipt of regulatory clearance from the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC), marking a significant milestone for XRP investors in the region. Canada to Host First Spot XRP ETF in North America The new ETF from Purpose Investments will offer direct exposure to XRP, currently the fourth-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. Unlike futures-based products, spot ETFs are backed by actual holdings of the underlying asset. This enables investors to gain price exposure without managing crypto wallets or dealing directly with exchanges. The approval from the OSC positions Canada as the first jurisdiction in North America to greenlight a spot XRP ETF. This follows the country’s earlier pioneering efforts in digital asset ETFs, including those based on Bitcoin and Ethereum. Status of Spot XRP ETFs in the United States While Canada is moving ahead, the United States has yet to approve any spot XRP ETFs. Several major asset managers, including Franklin Templeton , WisdomTree , and Bitwise , have submitted proposals to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to launch similar products. However, regulatory approval remains pending. Market watchers note that the launch of regulated XRP futures by CME Group has improved the chances of spot XRP ETF approval in the U.S., raising expectations to an estimated 88% likelihood by the end of the year. Overview of Existing U.S. XRP ETF Products Although no spot XRP ETF has been approved in the U.S. to date, some alternative ETF products have already entered the market. In April 2025, Teucrium introduced a leveraged XRP ETF, which aims to deliver double the daily return of XRP. Additionally, Volatility Shares rolled out a futures-based ETF in May, offering investors one-to-one exposure to XRP’s performance using regulated futures contracts. These products provide some exposure to XRP for U.S.-based investors, but they differ in structure and risk profile from spot ETFs. Market participants continue to monitor the SEC’s next moves, anticipating broader access to XRP investment options.
